To strengthen our Gene Therapy Vector Core group, based in our Bedford, MA offices, we are looking for a talented individual to fill the position of: Sr. Research Associate - AAV Upstream Process Development.

The Upstream Process Development is looking for a talented Scientist with experience in viral vector production. As an upstream scientist, you will act as a cell biologist/ process engineer with experience in viral vector or biologics production. This individual will support multiple therapeutic gene therapy programs by assisting in the development of an AAV upstream platform for use in research and vector production. A successful candidate will support scale-down characterization experiments to optimize the production process and evaluate/implement improvements.

You like to work in an environment where you can:

  • Support experiments related to optimizing critical parameters for vector production including cell culture optimization, transfection efficiency, and bioreactor set-points scales from shake flasks to 50L.
  • Perform routine production of viral vectors (AAV) at shake flask and bioreactor scale to support downstream, analytical development, and internal research efforts.
  • Support operation and development using high throughput AMBR bioreactor systems.

You will contribute by:

  • Collaborating with downstream, analytics, and vector biology teams.
  • Functioning independently and cross functionally across various UCB teams (medicinal chemists, cell biologists, disease area exerts, antibody engineers, etc.).
  • Authoring technical reports and assist in tech-transfer as needed.
  • Managing priorities and engage/communicate in a multidisciplinary environment.

Interested? For this position, you'll need the following education, experience and skills:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BSc/MSc in molecular biology, biochemistry, engineering, or virology.
  • BS 4+/ MS 2+ Years of industry experience in research or CMC setting.
  • Direct industry experience with bioreactor operations at various scales and development of viral vector or biologics products.
  • Proficient with upstream bioprocess equipment for cell culture characterization (blood gas and metabolite analyzers, automated cell counters, etc.).
  • Expertise in suspension cell culture development - preferably mammalian cell culture.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MSc degree with direct AAV upstream production experience in industry.
  • 4+ years of industry experience.
  • Direct experience working with high-throughput AMBR bioreactor system for upstream process development.
  • Excellent communication and written skills.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented.
