Aspen Aerogels is a rapidly growing aerogel technology company founded in 2001 to capitalize on patented advances in aerogel manufacturing. Aspen's extensive portfolio of proprietary aerogel products are manufactured at scale and sold worldwide in the Electric Vehicle, Energy Infrastructure, Sustainable Building Materials, and Power Generation industries. The Sustainability Engineer will provide strategic, tactical and hands-on support to help achieve Aspen's long-term sustainability goals, which include achieving carbon neutrality by 2035. This position will focus on our climate impact and environmental portfolio, including monitoring our Company emissions reduction strategy to meet our targets and compiling our annual greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting across Scopes 1 and 2. The position is responsible for collaborating on external reporting, customer diligence requests, and regulatory compliance in coordination with relevant stakeholders. The ideal candidate should have a strong attention to detail, be able to thrive in a fast-paced atmosphere and have excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

The Sustainability Engineer will participate in cross-functional projects with the goal of implementing solutions pertaining to Aspen's sustainability strategy. Strong organizational and program/project management skills are required to optimize the performance of the cross-functional teams pursuing climate impact solutions.

The ideal candidate will be an environmental and sustainability specialist with at least 5 years of industrial experience identifying and working collaboratively with cross-functional teams to execute upon sustainability initiatives. Verifiable experience required in GHG emissions accounting/inventory, reporting and monitoring.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Environmental Impact Assessment:
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to conduct comprehensive assessments to evaluate material environmental impacts of our operations and products. Identify areas for improvement and help develop strategies to minimize our carbon footprint, reduce waste, and conserve resources.
  • Regulatory Compliance and Reporting:
    • Responsible for contributing knowledge, setting targets, and measuring results for all environmental initiatives.
    • Responsible for tracking data related to sustainability efforts across the business.
    • Spearhead external sustainability reporting, including customer diligence requests, annual company sustainability reports, and regulatory disclosures in coordination with Legal, Compliance and Regulatory Department.
  • Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Partner with Aspen leadership to develop a sustainability strategy that aligns with Aspen's near-term and long-term sustainability goals.
    • Determine and communicate progress and risks to Aspen's sustainability goals.
    • Identify and work with third party partners, vendors and utilities that support our sustainability goals.
    • Identify and distribute pertinent KPI's to measure progress on sustainability goals.
    • Work with cross-functional teams to identify and develop energy management, waste reduction, water conservation, and sustainable design strategies.
    • Adopt and follow Aspen's core values of Safety, Quality, Integrity, Teamwork, Customer and Innovation on both a personal and professional level.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

  • A bachelor's degree in Sustainability, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Social Governance (ESG) or similar is required.
  • At least 5 years of experience in sustainability engineering or related field.
  • Experience in GHG accounting/inventory, reporting, and monitoring required. Experience in reporting to sustainability rating agencies (e.g., EcoVadis) required.
  • Experience with regulatory compliance as well as voluntary disclosure such as CDP and familiarity with frameworks such as TCFD.
  • Familiarity with corporate safety programs and ISO 14001 standards.
  • Effective communication, presentation and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate and influence across all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.

Desired

  • Expert in sustainability issues and how they can be integrated in a business environment to create measurable value.
  • Demonstrated ability to locate and secure government incentives tied to sustainability such as grants, tax credits, rebates and subsidies etc.
  • Knowledge of current manufacturing sustainability challenges and initiatives.
  • Experience working in a matrixed environment with multiple cross functional stakeholders.
  • Ability to evaluate financial data and apply basic financial principles.
